چکیده
The black hole mass of BL Lac objects from the stellar velocity dispersion of the host galaxy ABSTRACT The correlation between black hole mass M BH and stellar velocity dispersion σ in nearby elliptical galaxies affords a novel way to determine M BH in active galaxies. We report on measurements of σ from optical spectra of 7 BL Lac host galaxies. The derived values of σ are in the range of 160 – 290 km s −1 corresponding to M BH of 5 × 10 7 to 1 × 10 9 M ⊙. The average ratio of M BH to the host galaxy mass is 1.4 × 10 −3 , consistent with that estimated in other active and inactive galaxies. The velocity dispersions and the derived values of M BH of the BL Lacs are similar to those obtained for low redshift radio galaxies, in good agreement with the predictions of the unified models for radio–loud active galaxies. The Black Hole Masses and Host Galaxies of Bl Lac Objects
We have measured the central stellar velocity dispersion in the host galaxies of 11 BL Lac objects with redshifts z ≤ 0.125. The range of velocity dispersions, ∼ 170 − 370 km s−1, is similar to that of nearby radio galaxies. Using the correlation between stellar velocity dispersion and black hole mass defined for nearby galaxies, we derive estimates of the black hole masses in the range 107.9 −...
متن کاملVelocity Dispersion and Black Hole Mass in the Blazar Markarian
The recently discovered correlation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion provides a new method to determine the masses of black holes in active galaxies. We have obtained optical spectra of Markarian 501, a nearby γ-ray blazar with emission extending to TeV energies. The stellar velocity dispersion of the host galaxy, measured from the calcium triplet lines in a 2× 3.7 apertu...

متن کاملThe effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملSupermassive Black Hole Masses of AGNs with Elliptical Hosts
The recently discovered tight correlation between supermassive black hole mass and central velocity dispersion for both inactive and active galaxies suggests a possibility to estimate the black hole mass from the measured central velocity dispersion. However, for most AGNs it is difficult to measure the central velocity dispersions of their host galaxies directly with the spectroscopic studies....
